Maha Shivaratri Calendar
Maha Shivaratri is a major Hindu festival celebrated in honor of the god Shiva. It marks the night when Shiva consumes the poison to save the world.
Why Maha Shivaratri is Celebrated
Maha Shivaratri, literally "The Great Night of Shiva," is celebrated annually in honor of Lord Shiva. Unlike other festivals that are celebrated during the day, Maha Shivaratri is celebrated at night. Legends say this is the night when Lord Shiva performed the heavenly dance of creation, preservation, and destruction (Tandava). It also marks the wedding anniversary of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
Observances & Rituals
Devotees observe a strict fast (vrat) and perform a night-long vigil (Jagaran). They visit Shiva temples, offer Bael letters (leaves), milk, and water to the Shiva Lingam, and chant "Om Namah Shivaya". The festival is a time for self-reflection, introspection, and meditation.
