Understanding Navratri
Navratri (Nine Nights) is a major festival dedicated to the worship of the nine forms of Goddess Durga (Navadurga). While there are four Navratris in a year, Sharad Navratri (post-monsoon) and Chaitra Navratri (spring) are the most significant.
Regional Celebrations
- North India: Celebrated with Ramlila performances culminating in Dussehra (burning of Ravana effigies).
- Gujarat: Famous for its energetic Garba and Dandiya Raas dances performed in circles around a lit lamp or clay pot (Garbo).
- South India: Celebrated as Golu, where dolls are displayed on steps (Golu Padi). The days are divided to worship Durga, Lakshmi, and Saraswati.
