A 200-Year-Old Tradition

The Ramnagar Ramlila, recognized by UNESCO, is the oldest and most famous performance of the Ramayana. Staged on the banks of the Ganga in Varanasi, it lasts for 31 days. The entire town of Ramnagar transforms into a stage, with different locations representing Ayodhya, Janakpur, Lanka, etc.

Authentic Experience

Unlike modern productions, this Ramlila uses no microphones, electric lights, or loudspeakers. Actors perform under the light of massive oil lamps (Petromax). The audience moves along with the actors to different venues. The dialogue is recited in the traditional Awadhi dialect, based on Tulsidas’s Ramcharitmanas.
