Significance of Amavasya
In Hinduism, Amavasya is the day of the new moon. It is the darkest day of the lunar month. While it is generally considered inauspicious for starting new auspicious works (like weddings), it is the most powerful day for worshiping ancestors (Pitru) and performing remedies for Pitru Dosha.
Important Rituals
- Pitru Tarpan: Offering water and sesame seeds to ancestors.
- Donations: Giving food and clothes to the needy.
- Silence (Maun): Many observe silence to conserve energy, especially on Mauni Amavasya.
