The history of this temple is unique in that it bridges ancient tradition with the devotion of the 19th century. Towards the end of the 1800s, the Mudaliar family of Kalavai, who were ardent devotees of the famous Mel Malaiyanur Angala Parameswari Temple, felt a divine calling to establish a shrine in their hometown.
The Sacred Yantra: Tradition holds that Appu Mudaliar, the founder, traveled to the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam to seek the blessings of Sri Sankaracharya Mahaswamikal. The Acharya granted him a sacred Maha Meru Yantra (a geometric instrument of power), which was subsequently consecrated within the sanctum. This Yantra is believed to be the spiritual battery of the temple, amplifying the Goddess’s healing energies.
Under the leadership of Kannappa Mudaliar, the temple gained prominence across Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. A statue of Kannappa Mudaliar stands within the temple complex today, commemorating his tireless service in spreading the glory of Angala Parameswari.
Architectural Marvels
The temple is a classic example of Dravidian architecture, characterized by its towering Rajagopuram and intricate stonework. While the main sanctum houses the standard four-armed deity holding the Udukkai (drum), Trisula (trident), sword, and the Varada (blessing) mudra, the true architectural marvel lies in the Mandapa.
Adorning the front mandapa is a breathtaking stucco relief sculpture of the Goddess that spans over five meters in length. She is depicted lying face up within a geometric Shatkonam (six-sided star), resembling a sacrificial pit. The sculpture is vividly colored, showing multiple arms wielding divine weapons, creating an awe-inspiring visual of the divine energy resting beneath the earth.
