BAPS Abu Dhabi Mandir

The BAPS Abu Dhabi Mandir stands as a symbol of hope, not just for the Hindu community but for the future of interfaith dialogue and understanding. It paves the way for greater collaboration and acceptance between different faiths, creating a more peaceful and harmonious world.

On February 14th, 2024, a historic moment unfolded in the heart of Abu Dhabi. The doors of the BAPS Hindu Mandir, the first traditional stone Hindu temple in the Middle East, officially opened, marking a significant milestone for religious tolerance and cultural understanding in the region.

Deities

The mandir houses the murtis of Swaminarayan, Akshar-Purushottam, Radha-Krishna, Rama-Sita, Lakshmana, Hanuman, Shiva-Parvati, Ganesha, Kartikeya, Padmavati-Venkateshwara, Jagannath, and Ayyappan.

History

The story begins in 1997, when Pramukh Swami Maharaj, the then spiritual leader of the Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS), visited the UAE. During this visit, he envisioned a mandir in Abu Dhabi, not just a place of worship, but a bridge between cultures and religions. This vision became the seed for the grand project that unfolded years later.

In 2015, the UAE government’s landmark decision to allocate land for the temple construction marked a significant step forward. This gesture symbolized the country’s commitment to religious tolerance and cultural understanding. The initiative received further support from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, who gifted the land, solidifying the foundation for the project.

On February 14th, 2024, the grand inauguration ceremony marked the culmination of years of dedication. The event resonated globally, with millions of Hindus worldwide participating in a virtual “Global Arti,” symbolizing the shared spirit and unity of the community.

Crafted from pink Rajasthan sandstone, the temple stands tall at 108 feet, a symbolic number in Hinduism representing spiritual completeness. The facade, bathed in the warm desert sun, features intricate carvings depicting stories from Hindu mythology, universal values, and prominent figures who embody harmony and peace.

Seven Spires Reaching for the Sky:

Crowning the edifice are seven majestic shikhars, each symbolizing one of the seven Emirates of the UAE. This gesture signifies respect for the local culture and embodies the spirit of inclusivity that the temple represents.

A Dome of Harmony and a Dome of Peace:

Two central domes, the “Dome of Harmony” and the “Dome of Peace,” grace the interior. The intricate carving work within them depicts elements of the natural world – earth, water, fire, air, and plants – emphasizing the interconnectedness of all creation and the importance of living in harmony with nature.

A Journey Through Stone:

Step inside, and you’re greeted by 402 intricately carved pillars, each crafted from 25,000 individual stone pieces. These pillars showcase the remarkable skill of Indian artisans, their dedication evident in every delicate detail.

Where Marble Meets Sandstone:

While the exterior boasts the warm hues of sandstone, the inner sanctum shimmers with Italian marble. This juxtaposition creates a visual dialogue between tradition and modernity, highlighting the temple’s ability to bridge generations and cultures.

More Than Just Aesthetics:

Sustainability played a key role in the construction. Nano tiles cover the floor, remaining cool even in the scorching desert heat. Additionally, no ferrous materials were used, ensuring the structure’s longevity in the harsh climate.
