After capturing North India, Rajendra Chola on his way back to Chola Kingdom stayed here for night with his army. He found his elephant got fainted tied to the Palai Tree. Out of rage, he ordered to cut down the tree. When they started cutting the tree, blood started oozing out from the tree. Hence, he ordered his troops to slowly excavate and to find the reason behind the blood. They found a white colored Lingam from the bottom of tree hidden inside the roots. On seeing the Lord, Emperor Rajendra Chola ordered his troops to build a temple for Lord and bestowed the temple with lot of lands for the Poojas and maintenance of the temple.
