Explanation in English:
This verse marks the beginning of Chapter 2 – Sankhya Yoga (The Yoga of Knowledge).
Sanjaya (the narrator of the Gita, speaking to King Dhritarashtra) describes Arjuna’s mental and emotional state. Arjuna is deeply distressed and filled with sorrow, seeing his relatives, teachers, and friends arrayed on both sides of the battlefield. His eyes are brimming with tears, and he is paralysed by compassion and grief.
At this moment, Lord Krishna, referred to here as Madhusudana (the slayer of the demon Madhu, signifying the destroyer of evil or ignorance), begins to speak. What follows in the next verses is Krishna’s philosophical response that sets the foundation for the Gita’s teachings.
