Varanasi was founded by the god Shiva. Locally it is known as Benares or Kashi. The Buddha is believed to have founded Buddhism here around 528 BCE when he gave his first sermon.
Author Mark Twain wrote in 1897 of Varanasi, “Benares is older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend, and looks twice as old as all of them put together.”
