Azhagu Perumal Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu located at Vaniyambadi Town in Vellore District of Tamilnadu. Presiding Deity is called as Sundararaja Perumal. The speciality of this temple being that the Lord is in a posture ready to apply his Sudarsana Chakra for the ‘Samharam’ (Prayoga Chakra). The other deities are Sundaravalli Thayar, Laxmi Narasimhar and Hanuman.
An inscription in the temple says it was built by Madurantaka Cholan who preceded Raja Raja Cholan. Hence the temple should have been built in the 11th century. Incidentally Raja Raja Cholan’s father’s name was Sundara Cholan. Hence the name for the main deity in the temple. Sundara and Azhagu mean ‘beautiful’ in Sanskrit and Tamil respectively.
